What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is a detailed, structured style of yoga founded by B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the most respected yoga masters of the 20th century. With over 80 years of dedicated practice, B.K.S. Iyengar’s method became known for its emphasis on precision, alignment and mindful sequencing.

Using props such as blocks, belts and The Great Yoga Wall, Iyengar Yoga makes postures accessible for all bodies and abilities. It’s a practice that gradually builds strength, flexibility and inner awareness, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced students alike.

Starting at Intro Level — Ideal for Beginners

If you’re new to Iyengar Yoga, our Intro Level classes provide a clear, supportive foundation. In Iyengar Yoga, postures are grouped into seven categories — you can read more about the 7 groups of yoga postures here. At the Intro Level, you’ll primarily explore standing postures.

Why start with standing postures? These poses build strength, flexibility and stability, while helping you become grounded — literally learning to land squarely on two feet. You’ll learn how to extend the limbs, open the chest and lengthen the spine in a supportive, structured way.

Classes are thoughtfully sequenced. The body is progressively prepared with simpler postures, building toward a peak pose — the most challenging in the session — before gradually bringing the system back to a calm, steady state. This careful pacing works with the nervous system to balance energy and ease tension.

Effects of the Practice

Iyengar Yoga is a dynamic and precise practice that creates space and freedom within the body. As you move with awareness, the system opens, untying areas of held tension and restriction. This frees up energy and improves the flow of circulation, breath and vitality.

The goal is to leave each class feeling light, steady, calm and focused. The dynamism of the practice combined with precise alignment work helps to relieve physical and mental strain, making it an excellent choice for anyone seeking improved wellbeing, better posture and a clearer, calmer mind.
